Milkshake IPA with oranges. Poured from a can into a Woodburn tulip. The pour is orange in color and downright murky with no clarity whatsoever. It looks like orange juice with a touch of grenadine syrup added. It sports a two finger head of rocky off-white foam with good retention. On the nose I get fresh oranges, a little vanilla, and hints of lemon and peach.
Medium-light body with a firm feel and a fruity, slightly bitter flavor. Up front I get some biscuit-like toasted malt notes, a hint of toffee, and some vanilla. The oranges and citrusy hops come in at mid-palate and combine with the sweet notes to create a flavor like a creamsicle. The oranges carry through to the back of the palate and linger pleasantly behind along with the citrusy hops.
My first review of a beer from Sonder, but it won't be my last. When I tried this (and one other) at Bottle Lodge in Cincy, my buddy and I immediately drove over there and bought up several 4-packs of miscellaneous beers. The sweetness of this beer may turn off some hopheads, but I think it complements the citrusy character perfectly. Was the brewer trying to make a beer that tastes like a creamsicle? If so, mission accomplished. Definitely recommended.
