Pours milky, opaque, muddy yellow. A brief head is at first nearly indistinguishable from the beer itself. The boisterous head eventually fades, leaving a sticky residual film, including pulp, on the side of my Pretentious Beer Glass Company Pub tulip glass. This film is remarkably unappealing. Yet, inexplicably, it is what one ought to expect from the style.
Mango all but dominates the nose, settling back to allow fresh-squeezed orange juice, light pineapple, and quite possibly cinnamon. This beer is simultaneously familiar and out of place, eluding identification. Could it be banana peel? Quite possibly. The banana is authentic, though unexpected and unlike that experienced in a Heffeweizen. The aroma is a very complex mix of fresh, clean and earthy. In an event, it is pleasant.
The flavor settles the debate on the authenticity of the banana. It IS banana. Ripe mango is in equal proportion. Orange juice follows and becoems obvious with a little warmth. Light sourness, sweetness, and bitterness are balanced. The finish is long, mild and fruity.
This beer has a dense body with a soft, lush, and furry texture. There is no trace of alcohol. Carbonation is light. Pulp is present, though in moderate proportion. Some residual sugar is left on the lips.
These beers are perplexing. On the one hand they are very appealing. On the other, they are barely identifiable as beer. They should be off-putting. Yet, it all works to provide a fruity, quenching experience.
