Pours a very dark ruby brown color, bordering on pitch-black, but not quite. The head is a finger high and khaki in shade; the overall duration and creaminess are on point. Apart from the low lacing left on the glass, I have nothing to complain about how it looks in a glass. The aroma brings the milk chocolate, toffee, and almonds in a big way; less big are the barrel notes. I pick up some vanilla and oak, but overall, it plays second fiddle to the (admittedly impressive) base beer. The flavor profile brings more dark fruit qualities compared to the nose, though the chocolate, nuts, caramel, and toffee are still there and still decently layered. And then, on the finish, BOOM! Oak barrels, vanilla, and coconut pop with vigor on the back of the palate. I'm amazed how coconut-forward this one seems, considering it had none added to begin with. The barrel presence is so delicate and subtle in the right way, without being timid or weak. It feels more slick than creamy on the palate, but still has enough softness to go down decadently. A touch of alcohol warmth lingers, as does some of the sweetness. Carbonation is low. What a beastly lager! The barrels work together harmoniously with the rich, sweet base, and the end product never feels scattershot or overbearing. All in all, a fabulous barrel-aged porter.
