This is an ode to New World fruit bombs. The 49% of Malbec grapes from the Plum Ridge area of Sonoma explodes into a galaxy of rich, red fruits, particularly a focused cherry note. Dry and dangerously drinkable, this oenobeer has a definite vinous character.

L:. Pours a dark purple with notes of mahogany red, no head or lacing, looks a lot like red wine.

S:. Vinous with notes dark red fruit, including lots of cherry, smells a lot like wine.

T:. Dark red fruit, including cherry, not as vinous as nose would suggest, a slight acidity as it slides down the throat. Very reminiscent of red wine.

F: Quite dry and very reminiscent of a red wine mouthfeel.

O:. Very interesting beer that drinks a lot like red wine.

this one is the most what i expected from these guys, a heavy heavy heavy red grape beer that drinks as much like a glass of rich sturdy red wine as it does a beer, but oddly enough, it was one of only a couple of red grape beers, and the only one of its kind. this one uses a heap of malbec, and its really true to the fruit. served in a beautiful wide angled red wine glass, it doesnt have much head on it and has some long legs, looks more like wine than beer to me, a sexy deep purple color. the aroma is fruit forward, some plum, raspberry, and mineral notes, as well as a little bit of the belgian type ale yeast too. they call it a dubbel at its base, which i think is a stretch, or else there is enough fruit in here to totally overwhelm that, which seems unlikely. i dont get the darker malt sweetness to it, i dont get the richness of feel, and i dont get the belgian yeast to the extent i would expect from a dubbel, but the yeast was quite subtle in all of the beers in here. i like the fuller heavy body, and i like the tannic tang of the fruit, it keeps this from ever feeling too big or strong, the alcohol is well disguised too. it would benefit from some time in oak, i think it would be incredibly wine-like at that point, but i want it! some fruity sweetness swirling around, mild blackberry and black cherry, even a note of purple grape candy, balance just enough by earthy grain. overall a crazy impressive beer, a wonderful showcase of the malbec grape, and overall a style i hope the focus on moving forward. nothing quite like this out there...
