Rum Barrel Varsity: Velvety body and rich malt character paired with freshly emptied Muddy River Rum barrels is the perfect marriage for a barleywine. Exquisitely rich and sophisticated, boastful notes of toffee, raisin and rum cake are balanced by the oak and light char from the barrels.

Oftentimes rum barreled beers come across as harshly woody with minimal liquor notes to me. This one though is explosively, deliciously rummy! I get tons of of charred brown sugar, lots of coconutty rum, plus hints of banana and baker's chocolate. This is big, brazen, and an absolute treat, thanks again Tom!

Picked up a 500 ml bottle from the Appalachian Vintner in Asheville 8-15-23 for $13.99. 2022 edition; sampled 9-13-23.
Beer poured murky brown with a very nice tan head that has some hang time.
Nose is very nice with notes of dark fruit, baked dark bread, and a hint of rum.
Taste is very good as the very large malt base gives notes of brown sugar, raisins, and toffee. The barrel gives a hint of chocolate along with the rum warming quality with each sip. Finishes with an appropriate amount of sweetness.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, with each sip being very smooth and satisfying.
Overall, the Town Brewing team did a very good job all the way around with this brew. Would not hesitate to pick their goodies up in the future!
