Stopped into The Beer Store (Nashua) today and was surprised to see this on the shelf. Thought it was brewery-only release today, for their 1st Birthday party... Anyhow, snagged a 750ml bottle, #180 of 250, for $19.00. Here goes...

Poured about 1/2 the bottle into a snifter... It's a slightly hazy brew, with a lovely amber-mahogany color. Head is very thin, with most foam clinging to the edges. Is also light on the lacing. Aroma is malty, with caramel and toffee, plus some molasses and brown sugar. Smells nice! Has a decent feel, with a mostly medium body.

After having the aroma run by my senses, I was expecting flavor on the sweeter, malty side. What hit the palate was very much on the fruity side. There is some subtle caramel at the onset, and then some pear and green apple. Now this has been aged on bourbon oak, and I can get a bit of a woody aspect. This is a different beast - not really what I think of for an American Barleywine, like Bigfoot. No overwhelming malt followed by über-piney, resiny action. It's light on the malt, and then quite fruity, but not citrussy. I'm liking it a bit more than my first sip, which gave me a "WTF?" reaction, though it's still a work in progress. I may try it again on tap at the brewery, but I can't drop another $19 on this; just not worth that coin. Prosit!
