Mediterranean IIPA DDH with Galaxy, Comet and Polaris
.
Giovanni II Bentivoglio, the tyrant who ruled Bologna with a tight grip, sentenced Luca Gaurico to the torture of Mancuerda in 1504. The Italian Astronomer, Astrologer and mathematician was known for his scientific contributions and famously prophesied alongside Nostradamus. When Giovanni consulted the astrologist about he and his sons destinies, displeasure was an understatement. Luca was then subjected to the torture (which he survived) and exiled from Bologna.
Tight cords were wound around the limbs (usually arms) while the condemned was belted/secured to a stationary structure. The executioner would exert his weight opposite his victim or use leverage to pull the cords against themselves, the tightening eventually cutting through the skin, muscles and directly to the bone. Repeating until the stretching of limbs and cord slicing caused the victim to faint or expire.
.
A foundation of Eraclea Pilsner grown just 160km (100 miles) from the site of the bloodshed, provides a sticky sweet mouthfeel with hints of honey and aromatic lacing. Double dry hopped with Comet, Galaxy and Polaris as tribute to Luca Gaurico. While the Bentovoglio family crest emblazons the floor on the label.
.
Soft sweet pineapple mint, fresh cut onion grass, and mandarin zest aromatics. White nectarine, sweet cantaloupe, star fruit and complemented by underlying eucalyptus. Juicy grapefruit flesh finish that lingers.

No date on can, into an Ethereal Brewing tulip.

Pours a dark, hazy orange with very little foam, probably due to the speed of my pour. Aroma is peaches and white gummy bears with a little vegetal dankness and sugar. Flavor is similar, a lot of peach and nectarine as well as overripe melon, which feels common in massive hazy IPAs. It's a little sweet, definitely boozy, but heavy on the saturated, candied fruits and tropical flavored candies. Other reviewers mentioned mint, and the mint/menthol flavor sits very well with the sweet, almost cloying fruits to balance things out. Rather low bitterness as well, with some alcohol warmth and a little bite on the finish. Body is huge, alcohol apparent and a little off putting. I'm finding out quickly I really don't like anything above 9.5%, and this one is no exception. It's a lot and I find the booze to be distracting from the hop flavors which makes it hard to drink. I don't like the larger malt presence, and while it's a good sipper, I'd rather get that from something darker rather than an IPA.

Overall, I get that this is a good huge IPA, but it's not my thing. I can appreciate the flavors, but the sheer potency of it outweighs my enjoyment.

From the pint can, it pours a hazy orange-yellow color with a very nice thick creamy head that slowly reduces and leaves lots of lacing. The nose is awash in citrus, followed by the mouth getting lots of citrus flavors, including pineapple and orange in a lovely malt brew. Mild pleasant citrusy aftertaste.

16 ounce can into a tulip snifter. Canned 7/15/20, had 9/21/20.

Pours a hazy yellow, with a one and a half inch head of creamy foam with very good retention and a decent amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of pineapple, some orange and grapefruit, malt, light mint at the open that fades. Flavors of pineapple, grapefruit, melon, malt, pine- especially in the finish and aftertaste, some orange as it warms, faint vanilla. Has a light eucalyptus or menthol undertone and there’s a decent amount of hop bitterness on the finish that lingers. Smooth, creamy, a solid light to medium body, well carbonated.

Excellent flavors. There always seems to be something unique or different with their beers- here it’s the mint and menthol. Good aroma, but it kind of faded. Well worth a purchase.

This was yet another beer that I picked up recently at Gary's in Wayne as I've never had anything from Nightmare before. Of course, I was intrigued by the art on the can and even more so with the story behind this. If there was something that was strong, memorable, and cut to the bone, this was it as it was a beast from the get-go and never let up. A lot of that had to do with it's alcoholic content but more so because of the unique and biting taste, which wasn't anything like any other Imperial IPA that I've ever reviewed on here.

No surprise that the look to this beer was a deep honey gold that was cloudy and topped off with a soft, voluminous head that took it's time settling down. Beautiful, well-defined rings of lacing were left behind as each thick and soapy layer bled down to the next with lots of spots lingering along the bottom half of my pint glass. Lots of Pilsner Malt, onion grass, scallion spice, and deep stone fruit were in the nose as the taste exploded way beyond what the aroma indicated. White peach, dank pineapple, eucalyptus, and a hearty, crisp mint all were felt on the palate with lots of deep, heavy Galaxy and hefty Comet and Polaris that complemented the booze while taking everything to another level. So much acrid and exotic fruit to go along with the malt and strength but in the end, this completely worked and had to be one of the easiest beers of this bulk that I've ever quaffed...

Stuck home in this pandemic? You'll want one of these as you won't have to worry about driving afterwards nor would you even be able to. It's every bit as strong as it's 10.2% would lead you to believe. The sweetness and stickiness from the honey was just enough to keep the edges of this from being too sharp while fitting in nicely with the briskness of the mint and lingering fruit and grassy flavors that gave this a wonderful outdoorsy feel. Packaged on 7/15 with no sediment to be seen, I was so damn impressed with this as I will be on the lookout for these guys from here on out. Easily one of the best brews I've had this year!

A: The beer is very hazy to cloudy yellow in color and has some faint brownish hues. It poured with a finger high white head that left lots of lacing down the sides of the glass and a thin film of bubbles on the surface after it died down.
S: Moderate aromas of grapefruit citrus are present in the nose along with notes of peaches and passion fruit.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that the flavors of peaches and passion fruit are most noticeable in the initial taste whereas those of the grapefruit tend to be more in the finish. There is a light to amount of bitterness.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I liked the combination of fruit aromas and flavors in this IPA, which rather drinkable for 10.2% and only had some hints of alcohol in the taste.

16 oz 2019 can poured aggressively to an IPA glass. Gigantic head consumed about 75% of the glass with its pillowy whiteness. Took a little time to burn down to a persistent ring. Lacing stays all the way to the top of the glass. Nose is fragrant sweet grapefruit and some tropical something. First sip of foam is pithy grapefruit pulp. Full on sip is delicious blend of grapefruit, mango, papaya, orange. Mouthfeel is creamy, thick, syrupy like a TIPA, but not overbearing. Color is like ruby red grapefruit juice with a splash of orange juice. Carbonation is lively. A little more rind comes in as it warms. 10.2% ABV hides all the way, with only a tiny hint of warming near the end of the glass. I think I’ve enjoyed every Nightmare / Dorchester offering I’ve tried to date. Nice change from the heavy stouts I’ve been on for awhile. It did not take long for the whole thing to disappear. Buy it if you see it.
