I obtained a 500mL can of this beast for 1435 colones (approx. $2.70 US) at the Auto Mercado supermarket in Tamarindo, Costa Rico. 16% abv it claims, yes you read that right. Not sure I'm looking forward to this one.
Ingredients: water, barley malt, glucose, maize, hops, antioxidant E300. Exp: 04/11/2016. Lot: 06/05/2015 19:44. Can includes fine print info in 5 different languages including Arabic.
Fizzy, clear, dark golden brew gives a thin white head that foams up to maybe 1/2" before settling quickly. Aroma of sweet corn, booze, and a slight bitter hop. Taste is OMG rubbing alcohol. It burns, it burns, oww my aching taste buds, please make it stop. Hops nowhere to be found. Corny sweetness tries to fight back the burn but is clearly overwhelmed. I get less burn from a swig of decent liquor. Feel is super hot, slightly syrupy, with the vigorous carbo barely detracting also.
The key here is managing expectations. If you go into it understanding that it's a 16% can for under $3, it's actually not that bad. If you and a friend want to get a buzz quickly and on the super cheap, split one. If your dog just died and you need to drown your sorrows, again quickly and on the cheap, this is your go-to. My situation is just pure freakish curiosity, an afternoon to kill while on vacation. Is it awful? Absolutely. But that should come as no surprise and I can't honestly fault it for being a reasonably good version of what any reasonable person would expect.
