Luna & Fuego Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout is the perfect winter sipper. We started with a full, luscious imperial stout and added cocoa, cinnamon and vanilla, then spiked it with two types of chilies - sweet ancho and tangy guajillo. Once fermented, the beer was transferred to Woody Creek Rye Whiskey barrels to chill happily for eight months and soak up some of those caramel notes from the barrels.
The beer pours a viscous black, with a dark brown head. The vanilla and cinnamon give notes of horchata, while the cocoa and chili marry perfectly to create a decadently sweet and lingering spicy flavour. It's impossible to tell where the warming alcohol begins and the chili heat ends. Did we mention it's smooth? Ridiculously so.

A barrel-aged Mexican hot chocolate stout.
Appearance - Pours a dark molasses brown that once opened quite a significant amount of beer was lost. Not sure what happened with the quality control of this particular bottle at the brewery because this bottle was sitting up in my place for a week now.
Smell - earthy and leafy hops, cocoa, spicy aromas (perhaps chili pepper), hint of oak, roasted malts, and earthy yeast.
Taste - earthy and leafy hops upfront. The cocoa, chili pepper, cinnamon, and roasted malts come through next. The earthy yeast rounds out the brew. The oak and barrel element gets lost in translation from the strong notes of cocoa and spices.
Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes smooth and chewy with the spices and cocoa lingering.
Overall - A flavourful Mexican hot chocolate stout. For me personally, the barrel got lost in translation with the dominant cocoa and spice notes. I was rather disappointed by the gushing of the beer upon opening which translated to a sub-par start. Otherwise, an engageable brew.
