The moon rises again.
Our third iteration of Luna & Fuego Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout (11.6%) was aged for 8 months in Basil Hayden Bourbon Barrels. We start with an imperial stout and add cocoa, cinnamon and vanilla, then spike it with three types of chilies – sweet ancho, smoky chipotle and tangy guajillo - before moving to oak barrels to age through multiple lunar cycles.
You’ll pick up aromas of dark chocolate, dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel and all the usual aromatics you’ve learnt to love in a cup of richly spiced Mexican hot chocolate.
The cocoa and chili marry perfectly to create a decadently sweet and lingering spice heat. It’s impossible to tell where the warming alcohol begins and the chili heat ends. Did we mention it’s smooth? Ridiculously so. Salud!

Pours a very dark brown with reddish highlights - there is scant tan head that disappears and even with vigorous swirling never returns.
Nose is spicy - cinnamon, notes of chili peppers, vanilla along with chocolate and some notes of the bourbon barrel.
Sweet cinnamon vanilla chocolate, some caramel on the palate but with a gently growing spiciness - warming notes of peppers builds.
Smooth medium full mouthfeel - creamy but in no way rich or viscous - sweet chocolate with warming from bourbon and spice.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours black with no head. The nose is Mexican spice, chocolate, and toffee. The taste is excellent and follows the nose. Spice, cinnamon, chocolate, and black licorice. Some barrel, but it's minimal. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy. Full bodied. Excellent beer.
