Luna & Fuego. Moon & fire. The essence of winter, warmed by fiery heat.
Our fourth version of Luna & Fuego Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout (11.6%) has been aged for 10 months in cognac barrels. We started with a whopping imperial stout with cocoa, cinnamon and vanilla, then spiked it with a trio of chilies – sweet ancho, tangy guajillo and smoky chipotle.
The beer pours a thick, viscous black. The vanilla and cinnamon lend notes of horchata, while the cocoa and chili marry to create a decadently sweet and lingering spicy flavour. It’s impossible to tell where the warming alcohol begins and the chili heat ends. Did we mention it’s smooth? Ridiculously so.

Picked up a 500ml bottle from the Co-op on Kensington cold beer room in Calgary on 7-11-25 for $13.49 CAD. Bottling date not visible but per Untappd appears to be a 1-2024 release; consumed 7-15-25.
Beer poured black with a nice off white head with the original pour.
Nose is awesome, getting notes of mild roast, cinnamon, cocoa, and vanilla. Barrel brings dark fruit notes.
Taste is a mild roasted malt base that gives notes of chocolate and vanilla. Cognac barrels bring a touch of oak and a nice contribution of dark fruits. Chilis bring in some heat on the back end and combined with the hopping and roast keeps things in balance.
Mouthfeel is medium to large bodied and very smooth.
Overall, this is a very nice surprise and a tasty post late lunch sipper!

Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours a very thick black with basically no head. The nose is freaking amazing. The spice is evident here, along with notes of dark chocolate and cinnamon. The taste largely follows the nose. Chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, and the nice cognac barrels. The heat from the peppers really kicks in on the aftertaste. All I can say is DAMN! A wonderful stout with great thick mouthfeel.

500 ml bottle.
Very dark brown, near black with reddish highlights - no significant head even with vigorous pour and swirling.
On opening bottle notes of cognac booziness followed by a big hit of cinnamon and vanilla and cocoa; a touch of caramel.
Sweet and boozy on the palate with a huge whack of vanilla and cinnamon spice, cocoa and cognac and a distinctly building chili pepper heat.
Medium full mouthfeel without being syrupy - prickly carbonation (that may be accentuated a bit by the capsaicin) - spicy heat giving a smooth warming sweet booziness.
