18oz glass at the brewpub.
This beer appears a clear, dark amber-highlighted brown colour, with one finger of wispy and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some decent chunky band streaky lace around the glass as things evenly move along.
It smells of lightly toasted, bready and doughy caramel malt, licorice root, cafe-au-lait, and some plain earthy, musty, and herbal green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy cereal malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, cheap coffee, plums and prunes, and more well-understated leafy, herbal, and floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is average in its palate-tingling frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, with nothing really getting in the way of a good time here. It finishes trending dry, but still with a hearty dose of varied sugary notes.
Overall - this comes across as a genial version of the style, with the oatmeal doing well to aid in the mouthfeel, as it were. Worth seeking out, especially if this is your sort of thing.
