A bottle left over after GABF judging and given to me as a reward for my volunteer efforts. Pours a two finger dark brown head over a pitch liquid with no edgings. Smells clean alcohol, grassy hops, dark fruits, smoked malt, lemony, roast, chocolate.
Tastes potent hop grassy and earthy on a roast malt background. Drier than I'd expect, likely due to the readily apparent alcohol sting. Plum, fig, anise, chocolate are all buried beneath the hops and alcohol sting. Acid balance is a bit off, which creates an astringency that negatively affects the beer. Lighter viscosity than I would expect and the carbonation is more than I prefer in an imperial stout.
