a neat barrel aged wild ale here with gooseberry and elderflower, looks like they do a few different versions of this one, which is rad. cool little bottle here, lots of flavor, sourer than others ive had from yonder, but i continue to love what these guys do, which i had better access! this is blonde and lightly frosted looking, washed out pale with a decent white head on it, fading somewhat quicky but it stays nice and bubbly, a little sandy sediment in the very bottom but its no problem. the nose is quite puckery here, tight and bacterial first, fresh squeezed lemon and indeed some green gooseberry tang too, white winey oak, white wine vinegar, a hint of the elderflower and maybe vanilla, but subtle with all the acid, white currant and green pear in play too, some esters and funk as it warms, but more sour than funky in the aroma for sure. the flavor is a little more balanced, some grainy maybe wheaty heft in it, could be unmalted white wheat in this, its got an earthy base and some body which works to mellow some of the piquant sourness, which stays lemony and gooseberry forward, green gooseberry not the ripe purple ones, and the elderflower is a compliment, quite a ways back and most expressive right on the finish. a little lemon lime soda thing, pretty bracing sourness overall, some nice mature oak character, and a little bretty funk as it warms, very tart, green and pithy, but nuanced and delicious. another smart beer from these guys, subtly unique on the ferment and grippy and tangy to drink, springy and verdant and good!
