BOTTLE: 33cl format. Brown glass. Simple white and black label (De Molen's influence is evident). Cost was 7 euro (ouch!) at De Kaapse in Rotterdam. Unbranded pry-off crown cap.
Served cold into a conical pint glass in Paris, France. Expectations are high given the quality of the De Pelgrim/De Kaapse collaboration imperial stouts I've tried. Allowed to warm over the course of consumption.
HEAD: Dark tan colour of average thickness. Nice consistency. ~2 minute retention. Leaves no lacing.
BODY: Opaque solid black. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.
It looks nice for a Russian imperial stout.
AROMA: Chocolate malt. Dark malts. Coffee like acidity. Whisky, sure. Muted wood (not recognizably oak), Faint peat. No real roasted barley presence. Some char.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Chocolate and dark malts. Char. Coffee-like acidity. Bitterness wins out over the malty sweetness, but it's not terribly imbalanced.
The whisky is quite reticent though - I get nothing at all from the barrel, really.
TEXTURE: Acidic. Smooth, wet, full-bodied. Thick. Heavy filling. Not syrupy, though. Slightly sticky.
OVERALL: A bit simplistic (relative to other beers in the style), but worthwhile - just not at 7 euro a bottle. Nice work from De Pelgrim, but there's ample room for improvement.
