Tripping Animals Brewing "Wild Duck"
16 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 11/07/24 11:49 AM". Sampled on 12/23/24 3:54 PM
Notes via stream of consciousness: A clear deep copper body is capped by a short head of creamy off-white foam. The aroma is sweetish with dark skinned fruits and phenolic spiciness. I have no doubt that it's "Abbey" yeast although I don't know what specific strain it is. I'm not finding any hops but that's what I'd expect. On to the taste, the malt is rich and caramelish with an almost honey-like note. The dark fruitiness from the yeast works really well with it, as does its phenolic spiciness. I feel like I'm getting some leafy and herbal hoppiness but I could be wrong about that. The bitterness is moderate to minimum. I'm getting notes of apple, fig, black raisins, plum, dates, cherry, clove, and banana. What's the strength on this? Whoah! It's 8%, I wasn't expecting that as it doesn't seem that strong, it's so smooth and I'm not finding the alcohol at all. In the mouth it's medium-full in body and gently crisp. This is a very well brewed and balanced Dubbel that deserves some attention.

I don't see a date listed on the can or the label affixed to the can.
Appearance: The body is a beautiful shade of reddish-brown that leans closer towards red. It has shades sunburst orange and burnt umber at various parts of the body. It has excellent clarity. There is a very short head which is off-white and disappointingly small for the style. The color is great but it isn't enough to carry the rest of the appearance. No head retention and no lacing.
Aroma: A light bit of cherry comes through on the nose. Then there is some wood lacquer and plum with a bit of nail polish at the end. A bit of apple comes through at the end as well. Some of the aromas are nice but it gets torpedoed by these obviously negative aromatic components.
Taste: Up front there is a bit of cherry flavor and then there is a strong nail polish remover and apple flavor mixed with a huge dose of banana. A light bit of clove on the finish.
Mouthfeel: It has this medium-light body with low carbonation that feels out of place. It has a wet and lifeless finish.
Overall: It is a pretty disappointing beer and a sub-average attempt at the style. There are plenty of off-flavors and aromas which don't belong. Normally a beer like this would showcase the yeast profiles but this only seems to abuse them. I don't recommend it. I would recommend against buying this.

Released 12/6/22; drank 2/11/23 @ the Yarchives.
Mostly see-through brown/orange appearance.
Caramel, clove & apple cider notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Caramel, clove & apple cider flavors; a bit watery, too.
I've had worse American takes on the dubbel, but this also ain't gonna make you forget about Westmalle.

Belgian double with 8% ABV. Crisp tastes of malt but very week on the nose and limited pizaz. Not bad to drink but not signature like other of the brews.
