Possibly one of the worst named beers, but no prejudice going in. The pour to empty the contents of a pint can into a clear glass liter mug produced an excessive amount of stark white foam. Now concerns are founded, as it recedes unevenly and without any lacing inside the glass. The color of the brew is close to golden amber, reasonably bright, semi-cloudy and minus the foam, attractive. The smell isn't seductive at all. There's no malty base and the hops are merely vaguely citrusy. That's how it goes down. The starch backbone seems to be mostly oats and wheat. That means a thinner body and a missing taste layer for a good IPA. The hops are on the citrusy side, but one dimensional and produce no real transitions of taste, something the best AIPAs do. This one is pretty good at hiding a solid ABV but turning into something spicy, maybe peppery. Overall, considering its 8.5% ABV, this is pretty good. The alcohol is an included taste layer, not a detriment. But, it needs a better malt presence to truly work as a very good AIPA. That malt addition would not only add an extra layer of flavor, but help the mouthfeel. It's an acceptable heavy hitter, but not a great beer.
