Dark brown with dark red hues and a thin tan chain around the rim.
Wow, the barrel presence really pops to start off, almost like bourbon syrup even though it's a wine barrel. Then dark fruits like dates and prunes fill the smooth, medium-light body accented by toffee and caramelized brown sugar. A light heat comes out on the clean, dry finish with a very mild berry note that is only more welcome because of its minimal presence, allowing room for a cocoa powder exhale.
It's mostly mature barrel-aged quad deliciousness and it really comes close to some of my more favorite takes on this, which all veer into barrel aged barleywine characteristics.
---
A year and a half later, I think they did increase the currant addition, or else it has bloomed further, as this has a significantly more noticeable tartness and tannin chew to it, but still in relatively pleasant measure, allowing most of the above attributes to continue to shine.
