Sideward Brewing "Probably Nobody"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
Sitting on the porch at Sideward on a warm Florida day I was unsure about trying a beer that's described as an "IMP. STOUT W/ COCONUT, VANILLA, CACAO NIBS, AND ALMONDS" but I went for it anyway. Wow! I was blown away. The menu also said something like "Think Almond Joy" and that's exactly what it's like. It's sweet, richly chocolatey, and loaded with coconut. Almonds? I'm not sure, but I certainly get the vanilla though. Now, apart from the heat of the day, what concerned me about trying this beer is that the menu also mentioned citrusy and tropical hops. I thought there's no way that's going to work in a chocolatey coconut beer, but again I was wrong. I didn't find the hops at all at first because there was just so much rich malt there, but after several sips they started to come through. I got notes of orange mainly, which of course works because orange and chocolate go so well together. The citrusy is an undertone, but there is enough there that it helps to balance the beer because it is pretty sweet to begin with. I'm not sure how much bitterness is there, and I don't really get the alcohol even at 12%, but somehow it dries out in the finish. The candy-like chocolate lingers but it's quite pleasant, and to be honest, this really is more of a dessert beer - although I have no problem drinking it at any time. So here I am drinking the first of 4 cans that I bought because it's really that good, and I'm loving it. It's a flavorful treat that I'm just sippin' at, and the alcohol's got me chillin'. If I get a chance I think I'll grab another 4-pack before they run out.
