a tasty robust stout here done with local coffee from an operation called mudd. its incredibly coffee forward, as much cold brewed coffee as it seems beer to me, its that strong even in a bigger stout base, and i suspect it is in fact cold brew coffee blended in after fermentation, not some other method of incorporation, as its really bold and strong, that caffeine jolt is evident, and there is so little acidity to it, its smooth to drink and taste and is easy on the belly, but i could be wrong. its a little murky deep brown from the tap and doesnt hold much head. the aroma and flavor are coffee first with dark roastiness from the grain in behind it. i get an almond sort of nuttiness and dry cocoa from the coffee, deep roast just short of burnt, but enough malt sweetness in the flavor for this element to be really balanced in the mix. there is chocolate richness to this, a dryness to the coffee that makes it kind of oddly refreshing for the style, and i almost want to have this over ice, very strange for a big stout but thats my mood with this one. as a coffee lover, this really appealed to me, but i could see the call for more beer and less java. i also could use more carbonation in this, it stagnates just a little, but it ended up being one of the better beers we had here. cool place, interesting beers, recommended!
