jens in the woods is a series of barrel aged versions of this tasty grisette they brew, and this edition is done with brett and aged in wine barrels, picked the bottle up last summer from the brewery so it is approaching a full year old now, been waiting patiently in the cellar for this moment. its got a slightly brassy golden hue, mostly clear, with a high rising fizzing white head but it settles fast and doesnt leave any lace, a little thinner looking than i generally want in the style, expected perhaps a little more conditioning in the bottle over the year, but its not flat when i drink it and holds the carbonation it has pretty well, i like these maxed out on effervescence though and this is short of that for sure. the aroma is vinous, berry character from red wine it seems, more more oak than wine to me, earthy and unique on the grain side, wheaty but maybe some rye too, definitely a little spiciness here that gives this some depth. less brett character than anticipated here, especially with the cellar time, its only lightly funky, not radically different from what i remember the base beer being, seems sort of still evolving, still young, its dry and all, but its not done, its not that refined either, a little sloppiness to the funk, i want more here. i like the barrel character but it still doesnt make the base beer amazing, i hoped it would, but i know better. the base beer is solid but it didnt wow me at the time and its much the same here. overall i maybe should have given this another year, but its an enjoyable drink, flavorful and light. curious about some of the other barrel variants in the series too...
