Official 5th Anniversary Beer
A smooth, rich, full-bodied and deep amber Jopen, brilliantly balanced at 13%, leaning caramel but with delicate notes of star anise and lovely wood character from its year in Westward Whiskey barrels.

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Dark brown pour, small bubbly head disappears quickly. Sweet, malty aroma with boozy notes coming in last. Taste brings the strength right away, malty, sweet, boozy. Alcohol burn lingers.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown without any head. The nose is wonderful. Rich toffee. Mild sweetness. Wow - this is just so wonderful to smell. Some vanilla and bourbon are coming through, but the toffee dominates. Figs and apricots are also there.
The taste is a bit of a departure from the nose. The toffee is definitely there, but now a bitterness comes through. Pine, mint, oak, vanilla, leather, licorice, figs, plums, caramelized sugar, and grapes.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is a mix of oak, pine bitterness, and burnt toffee.

Dark red-brown with plenty of foam in the Brigand chalice. Huge aroma of toffee and roasted grain. Very thick body. Warming with alcohol and malty. The roasted flavors are really quite complex and delightful. Rich caramel and toffee flavor. Burnt sugar and a touch of butterscotch. Hoppy enough to keep it from being too syrupy, but it's not a lot of bitterness. It's a "Polish-style Barleywine," a Jopen beer, which makes it all the more interesting. From the 16 oz can purchased at Elizabeth Station. Dated 01/30/24.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a dark reddish orange with only small patches of off-white bubbles and a thin ring around the glass. Aroma of caramel malt, dates, toffee, mild whiskey and wood; a little boozy. Flavor follows, with caramel malt, toffee, figs, dates, whiskey and woody oak; sweet. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess. A rich, malty English style barleywine with great caramel malt; one of most authentic tasting caramel character I can remember, like biting into a classic cube of soft caramel. Tradition dark fruit and some light but pleasant barrel character. Carbonation is soft, although it is adequate on the tongue, a relief after a near still pour. Leans on the sweet side, otherwise a fine example of the style. Alcohol in the aroma, but the malt supports the ABV in the taste. Enjoyable. I'd get this again if it was available.

Lovely rich, deep kettle caramelization with dark Czech malt, richly fruity, sweeter than ideal but still solid. Warming bourbon. Buckwheat honey. Nearly still, which adds to the heft. Boozy, which helps cut through the big body a little. Solid.
