unique beer here, i hate to call it an american anything, because it certainly isnt that, save the wet hops, but im not sure where this fits, their own website calls it a white ale, but its also not really belgian, just a pale wheat ale type done with fresh hops, more european on the base beer, lorien is the varietal, so interesting on a number of levels, rustic and unique, cool beer for this time of year, uncommon anyway. sort of honey to apricot colored beer with light haze and a tall white head from the tap, lots of tiny carbonation, really a pleasant look and texture to this, the wheat is obvious on the palate, hearty but not heavy, right on. the hops are somewhat more subtle than expected in the nose, there is botanical freshness here, almost a cucumber peel thing, verbena, bee balm, that sort of springy herbal side, low apparent bitterness and not really fruity at all, more noble and grassy to me, tea-like, with some mild sweetness from the malt making it balanced, more grain than hop driven though overall to my senses, and some curious notes of light smoke, baked bread, and even wood, unexpected, european in the ferment, odd a little bit there too, one part saison, one part wheat lager, one part fresh hop beer, very unique even if i dont really have a context for it, would love to hear from the brewer on this one! the flavor is similar to the nose, more grain than hops but cool back and forth in what ends up being a shockingly drinkable beer for how interesting it also is. maybe as a fresh hop beer its a little underwhelming, this isnt dramatic and obvious in that regard really, id love to try the original version of this to compare, the hops do add freshness and herbal intrigue, a hint of lime leaf maybe, but this is more about the grain and frankly also the full character ferment. doughy, lightly spicy, bitter to a modest degree, again with a little smoke in the wind sort of vibe, hay and straw, agricultural and earthen, an almost iron thing, a toast to the wheat malt, so layered that i am thankful for the rushing carbonation washing it all clean each sip. this is a very old worldy and esoteric little beer, id love to know more about it, the fresh hops are an accent, and there is a lot to take in for something so drinkable. neat, possibly a polish thing?
