Our brewer's favorite staple beer is copper in color with moderate maltiness and features grapefruit hop character. This pale is brewed with traditional Cascade hops from the Pacific Northwest that linger on your palette. The name says it all: American strong, like Officer Bernie Welch, a legend in the Bangor Police Force. From Freeses’ Department Store through “Devil’s Half Acre,” with his billy club in hand, he wiped the smile off more than one hooligan’s face while keeping Bangor’s downtown safe.

A: crystal clear; medium gold in color; less than a 1 finger ivory head thar receded to a wispy cap; OK lacing;

S: metallic; wet cardboard;

T: some caramel through the middle and some grapefruit from the middle through the finish, but they just don't come together well; moderate bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: not something that I would come back to;

Frothy head of two fingers. It settles in a rocky fashion. The lace is thin and slippery with a few lingering spots and streaks remaining. The liquid is light copper and clear.

Rich caramel aroma. Mildly sweet. Low hop presence. I do get a small amount of iron odor after the third whiff.

Very smooth and rich body. The low carbonation enhances this. The flavor is far more bitter than the smell suggests. The base malt isn't as distinctive on the tongue. The hop finish has a drying effect on the beer. Overall, this is an easy drinking beer with a peppery finish.
