The Trees is our annual collaboration with Pure BS Maple Shack in Auburn, Mass., and is 100% brewed with fresh maple sap.

The Trees is a maple sap dunkel lager, featuring an aroma of toasted bread, notes of caramel, honey, and spice, a subtle hint of maple, and a dry, crisp finish.

Picked up a crowler of this at the brewery yesterday as the taproom is currently shut down due to Covid-19.

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a nice crystal clear chestnut hue with a thick two finger head that faded somewhat quickly to leave light lacing and a thin fizzy blanket.

S - Aromas of big biscuits and almost toffee notes, brown bread, light light honey sweetness. There is a tiny bit of maple on the finish but it's fleeting. Almost get a molasses aroma as well which could just be the interplay of the brown malts with the maple itself.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with rather big brown bread flavour and a little bit of toffee, especially on the finish. The earthier hops and the toffee notes bring an almost slightly burnt caramel flavour on the finish. Solid lager notes throughout. As it warms the maple comes out a bit, but remains a wispy fleeting sense which was the intention. Warmth also brings out a touch more lingering bitterness on the finish.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, crisp, clean. The body is a bit on the lighter side though.

O - Overall this was a solid enough Dunkel, nice brown malt characteristics here and the subtle maple on the back end was a nice touch. The body though could have been a bit heavier to help really bring things together. Still though, solid lager.

I do love me this style, and actually just brewed one a week ago, so I'll have to see how mine compares to this. Crowler filled yesterday

Pours a large off-white frothy foamy head with med retention, fair soapy lacing, slight chill hazed mostly clear copper color

Nose brings nice toasty brown malts, a touch biscuity, slight sweet toffee or caramel note, background bread crust, faint earthy herbal hop, a bit muted since it's so cold, so I'll see how it warms, which brings a bit of the maple, a brown bread crust with maple and honey dripped on it

Taste is more on the subtle side but nice, more of the toasted grainy malts, biscuity, toasted brown malts, bread crust, no sweetness but a hint of perceived brown sugar toffee like sweetness that eventually transitions into maple, touch of bitterness up front with mild herbal hop flavor, soft lager, drier finish with a bit more bitterness and earthy hops, clean finish without much lingering

Mouth is lighter bod, med-light creamy fizzy carb, soft lager

Overall a nice beer, a bit too light overall, I would have liked a bit more malt profile and body as well, but otherwise this was a well done lager, maple was there but not too much (in a good way), but I think the maple dried out the finish a bit too much and didn't leave enough malt in general
