Can to lager glass.
The appearance was pretty dark brown close to black in the glass. The pour was more of an amber/garnet brown sort of color. A finger's worth of eggshell white foamy head slid off to a sly glazed sheet sitting at the top of the glass.
The aroma had some sweet German yeasty earthiness wrapping around some dark toast and roasty nuts. Dark chocolate endings.
The flavor absolutely delved into the dry sweetness of dark chocolate, German yeast, dark toast and then brought some of the roast to meld nicely. Modest aftertaste of dark toast and dark chocolate through a dry sweetness.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a fine sessionability about it. Fairly slammable - barely any distraction. Pretty nice mobility along my tongue without any harshness. Good enough carbonation. Semi-sticky finish with dry dark chocolate notes and some bitterness.
Overall, absolutely a schwarzbier which I haven't found many brewed well by American brewers. And I am glad these homebrewers sought this profession to take what 14th Star did for them after they won that homebrew contest a couple years ago. I was skeptical about reviewing this due to what 14th Star did but as far as I know, it seems like they tweaked this to fit their own "style."
