Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a very dark, murky brown with 1 inch light tan head. Good retention.
S: Cola, lightly roasted caramel malt, and herbal mint with a hint of cloves and berries.
T: Roasted caramel malt, oak, bitter grainy hops, mint, cloves, cola, pepper, astringent minerals, and a hint of leather. A dark beer to be sure, but this one hits the lighter notes in this range. I typically like the heavier dark notes, but this one is very well done...nicely complex.
M: An amazingly light feel especially given the ABV. Smooth and a bit creamy up front...turning more bitter and dry into the finish. Lingers and matures nicely on the palate with bitter and sweet notes alternating.
D: Very drinkable, especially given the ABV. This one presents a different take on the style and does a commendable job. Good complexity. Seek it out for one interesting brew.

(I just stumbled across a draft for a review from a year ago, which I'll belatedly post now with that caveat, but these were specific notes taking upon tasting, so should be valid.) Bottle bought the previous autumn in a tulip glass. Good looking, like a dark cup of coffee, some light sediment, a ring of beige foam. Attractive aromas of liquorish, coffee, toffee, Tootsie rolls. Imperial stout flavors, roasty but not overdone, more liquorish and toffee, cherries, bitter chocolate on the finish. Mouthfeel is thinner than expected, oddly drying, more quaffable than some of the genre. Perhaps a notch less complex than some others but a worthy example of the style.

On Christmas Eve the mailman rang the doorbell and three beers two of each from this brewery were in a well packed box talk about your Christmas surprises the admin on this information is wrong on this beer but I am too lazy to send a correct. I just love padding the word count of Beer Advocate's rating system but I am going to continue to ramble just because it if fun. This beer rocked a nice quad or Belgian strong that reminded to a dryer version of the Het Anker Christmas beer. I give this one a 10 of clubs!

This is a real treat. I had this beer in my beerfridge for quit a time now. Time to drink it.

The brewers of 'de Nest' used the brew capacity from the Scheldebrewery to brew an own beer. They succeeded!

It is called a black and firm winterbeer. Poured in my Struise chalice this beers looks almost perfect. Nice deepdarkbrown fluid with a lightbrown head with millions of bubbles. After a few minutes the head shrinks into a small ring in the glass.

Good smell with some boozyness and burned malts.

Taste is very good, very drinkable, you smell the alcohol but you do not taste it. It makes me think of a good Struise beer and that is a compliment!
