Teaming up with our dear friends at Newbarns for our first Altbier - I Knew We’d Get Here - is akin to a Kölsch, being an ale that is brewed like a lager. A richer, darker grain bill gives a bright amber hue in this clean, crisp-bodied beer. The rye brings a peppery note that compliments a low hop-lingering finish. An ideal beer to pull us out of winter ready to look ahead to spring.

Back in my day we used to drink beers with trad + slightly ironic names like 'Old Thumper'. 40 years later we seem to be in a era of picking a random selection of words that create an unknowable kind of faux poignancy. Thus here I am trying a can of 'I Knew We'd Get Here'.
L- Mid chestnut brown, pours clear with a pale cream super-fine bubble 1Cm foam cap. There is good rising CO2 so the cap should hold well. It looks great.
S- It has a slightly bright aspect to the smell but with summer congestion I can't divine further detail.
T- Dry'ish, brief malts then notably dry hops return and build on the palate into the finish.
F- It reminds me of an English Pale Ale, say one where the trad hops are amped up and dry.
O- I associate Newbarns/Duration with more contemporary profile beers but this seems mostly trad to me. It's a nice beer but at this price if I wanted more of similar I'd perhaps just buy some trad Pale Ale/Bitter instead.
Bought from Bacchanalia, Mill Road, Cambridge 440ml can £3.35 BB: 31/07/2022.
