Jurmala, a Baltic Style Porter at 8.8%. Jurmala is the historic spa capital of the Baltics where many would recharge on the sandy beaches and enjoy the salty air, mineral rich waters and therapeutic mud. This Baltic Porter is a historical Imperial Dark Lager with malts that express subtle notes of caramelized sugar, licorice, chocolate and roast with a subtle dark dried fruit character. We release this dark and rich lager annually at the end of summer as we begin the transition to more stouts and porters for the fall and winter.

Reviewed less than a week after can release. Poured into a tulip glass. It pours a dark cola with ruby hues and a fluffy, light mocha head that dissipated quickly and thin sheen of lacing. It's fragrant smell features roasted malt, burnt coffee, char, tobacco ash, and whiffs of raisin and fig. The taste opens sweeter than I anticipated with a lot of coffee and dark chocolate. The dark fruit is also front and center and adds to the sweetness. As it warms in the glass there is increasing burnt peat, anise, and nuts. It's certainly smoky and roasty and there is a touch of hop bitterness at the finish. While it has the taste of a Porter, it drinks like a lager. It's surprisingly lite and and crisp with moderate carbonation, but the 8.8% ABV is warming. Overall, Jurmala is very flavorful and easy to drink. It's big enough to pair with a hearty meal. An excellent offering from Untied.
