CAN: 330ml. Aluminum. Standard pull-tab. Good label art. Best before 12/11/15.

Purchased at a Prisma supermarket and served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are average; this one of my first beers from this brewery.

Reviewed live as an American red ale per the label.

4.7% ABV. 12 plato. 46 EBC. 40 EBU.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: ~2 inches wide. White colour. Foamy. Frothy enough, with adequate thickness and fullness. Retention is nice - ~4 minutes. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

BODY: Dark caramel-copper. Murky and nontransparent, with low vibrance. No yeast particulate is visible, but it's not a crisp or clean-looking ale.

Not quite right for an American red; for starters it's neither amber nor red. But it looks generally appealing, I suppose.

AROMA: Hops are evident, with hints of resins and bittering hops atop a red malt backbone. Suggests a nicely balanced beer that suffers from too much dryness and coarseness. Nevertheless, it's nicely hopped for a Finnish beer and I'm looking forward to trying it.

No yeast or off-notes are detectable.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Red malts do come through nicely, dominating the beer. There's some nice hop character, with bittering hops and hop resins coming through. Well-balanced, though in fairness it is quite simple for a red ale. Hints of caramel. Has adequate depth, but it's not real nuanced or subtle. A nice build for an American red considering its brewer is Finnish.

Flavour duration and intensity are average.

No yeast or off-notes come through.

I do like it, but it does leave something to be desired.

TEXTURE: Well-carbonated. Lightly coarse and dry. Medium-bodied. Adequate thickness and heft on the palate. Unrefreshing. Coating.

Complements the taste nicely. Though there's no harmony of texture to taste.

OVERALL: One of the few central Finnish brews that manages to tick the boxes of the fundamentals of the style, but it still can't compete with the best offerings in the style - particularly the American greats. Nevertheless, it's worth trying for those who crave a good red ale and find themselves in Finland. I'd probably buy it again, though the price point is troublesome even though it's a supermarket brew. Certainly drinkable.
