Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with little light transmission in the glass and a half finger khaki head with great retention and slippery, solid lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, drip coffee, cocoa and light lactose. Flavor is dark toasted malt, light drip coffee, milky cocoa; a little sweet cocoa in the finish. Medium bodied with light to medium creaminess; good for the ABV. Rather mellow, but a peasant surprise. I'm a big fan of coffee in big malty stouts, but often find the coffee too stark in lower ABV brews. The flavor depth here is fairly light, but very nicely balanced and completely supports the moderate coffee flavors. Perhaps the mild lactose sweetness gives this a little more support to the flavor. Dialed back a bit, but nicely integrated and a pleasant evening quaff. Glad I found it.
