For Art of Confusion we blended some of our oldest and boldest barrel-aged stouts that were slumbering in Heaven Hill barrels for 24-36 months. We then conditioned the beers atop a rather unique blend of wild Thai bananas, as well as raw and toasted coconut. This beer pulls together some of the richest elements out of any stout we've ever released. The chewy lactone structures from both the barrel and adjuncts harmoniously integrate into the beer and make it feel indulgent and somehow still balanced. We let the carbonation ride low so you can experience all the decadent notes of coconut crème brûlée, bananas foster, and chocolate rum cake.

Pours black with an inky stillness, no head or foam rising above it. Above average oily legs stick to the glass, foreshadowing a heavy beer. Aroma is a slice of banana and a pinch of coconut, with roasty and toasty malts behind. Really interesting dynamic out front, giving it a big, semi-sweet aroma without candy bar notes. Molasses, dark chocolate, cocoa, and rum cake round out the rest of the nose. It's clearly big, but the booze isn't evident. Flavor profile mashes thoughtful touches of banana and coconut together over roasty and toasty malts. Banana has a banana bread quality to it, giving it a little extra sophistication and depth - not just a grocery store banana. Barrel and minor char add some depth and oomph, but just like the nose, the alcohol remains outside of the spotlight. Dark chocolate and molasses are sprinkled in throughout, adding some extra sweetness. Mouth feel is thick with a soft, decadent texture. Overall, very incredibly well done. Banana is thoughtful and the coconut adds some bold, creamy sweetness to every step of consumption. Very enjoyable. As of this review, this may be one of the best beers made in the Kansas City metro area for me.
