What’s better than going full fall mode for the last Madera release of the year!? Working backwards, we pulled barrel samples and looked for base beers that would compliment maple and pecan with notes of spice and rich vanilla. We ended up blending rye and wheated imperial stouts that were aged 17 to 21 months in Russell’s Reserve and Heaven Hill barrels. Once blended we then conditioned the beer on maple and hand-toasted pecans. The end result is straight out of the pastry case that remind us of maple nut creams, pecan brownies, and dark chocolate bark.

Pours black with a finger of khaki tan foam. Caramel colored oil rims around the top of the liquid. Aroma is thick vanilla, chopped pecans, maple, and molasses. Sugary dessert notes are abundant, and do well to sweeten up the start, but do not completely nullify or mask the heavy roasty, toasty malts and barrel behind - and that provides a great balance, a call and response between the two. Booze notes are minor. Flavor profile is thick pecans, vanilla, molasses, and caramel. A little fig and dark fruits slip through, adding some robust notes of sugary sweetness within the underlying stout. Barrel, char, and a little easy-going whiskey help ease into some additional depth and darkness. Barrel and booze notes remind me of some wheated whiskies, opening up into a semi-sweet heat without the force of bourbon or spice of rye behind it. Depth is phenomenal at every turn. Mouth feel is thick is fullness. Texture has a very bold feel to it. Overall, robust, full, thick, and semi-sweet - this is one heavy swinging stout and it delivers.
