golden kettle sour base here done with apricot and mint, yes i said mint, so strange! it doesnt even sound sensible on paper, but the beer tastes fantastic, really interesting and different, fresh and strange but also addicting, im really into it, i think all of us who shared in the crowler were. fine to look at, apricot orange and hazy, maybe a shade or two more toward yellow than that, very little head after a quick white rise and recede, slightly dense looking, with more and more sediment toward the bottom, a little gloopy down there and we leave a half inch or so in the can. it smells weird, herbal and intense like menthol from the mint, almost cooling to me, and its true when i breathe it out after each sip too, the apricot is natural and a little sweet, and balanced by the clean acidity of the base beer, nice. the flavor is great, neat and unexpected interplay between the mint and the fruit, definitely apricot jelly character up front with the mint dominating on the back end, not overdosed just robust, and the exhale is cold and refreshing, but it doesnt stay with me, its awesome. the sourness is just right, a little lemon to it, but just lactic and clean, nothing really to it, and a good pucker but not a gut turner. i love the flavors here i really do, but the objective quality of the beer prevents me from scoring it higher, its full of sediment, inconsistent from pour to pour in the can, and downright thick by the bottom with what seems like all the apricot puree settled out. these guys arent the only ones having these issues in these styles, shades comes to mind, but for this to be better beer in a scoring sense, it just has to get cleaned up. not an awful offender, and ill remember this fondly for the use of mint with the apricot, but the refinement is poor. a shame because the rest of this is really doing it for me and i continue to be impressed by atypical even with the slop in this crowler. totally original operation doing some awesome stuff!
