my in laws are so awesome, they always bring me back a bottle or two from these guys when they go up there, i am dying to join on one of those trip! ive always been a fan, such ambitious and clever beers, and this one is a ton of fun, a unique barrel aged spontaneous beer, done with local melons and lemon basil, truly exotic! way cool combination of ingredients. my guess is that this is aged in white wine barrels, it has a fruity sharpness to it that reminds me of a few of their other releases, more sour and acidic than bretty and funky, but not without a bit of that wildness to it, a bit cloudy, whitewashed looking, carbonated well enough but not holding much head with all the acid. crazy nose, the fresh herbal aspect from the lemon basil is front and center, new oak intensity, white wine again and even white wine vinegar, zested lemon, peppy basil, a minty almost menthol aspect, and the rindy green vegetal melon, almost more cucumber than anything else, faint sweetness, wheat malt, and white peppery ester character, mouthwatering all the way. more familiar melon juiciness in the flavor, makes it summery right away, tropical even, exciting and alive, even with the obvious wooden and bacterial maturity this hits with, shockingly sour, puckery from beginning to end, more sour than it needs to be, a limiting factor for me, this might be better as a bretty saison, more drinkable anyway, on the edge of way too sour, but the rest of it rules, i like the grain body in support, pale and earthy and softening, and the herbal freshness from the lemon basil, the basil and the melon are great together, and there is a nice vibrancy to the whole thing. white wine as it warms, honeysuckle, meyer lemon, verbena, vanilla, some starch on the palate, and some acetic character. really different and good, i wish it was toned down a little on the sour, but overall this is wonderful, these guys are killing it, and so under the radar. ive never had anything quite like this, great showcase of the melon!
