2020 vintage, guessing this has gotten increasingly sour over time, its bacterial sharpness is now off the charts, making a little feel like a lot, and a large format bottle seem like a mission, even though the flavor is good, its probably just continued souring and its well past reasonable now five years on, less impressive than the underdressed butler wine grape beer i had from them many years ago, but that wasnt this old or anything, and i still like this a lot, i just cant have much of it. stained glass pink look to this, fizzy like soda but unable to really hold any head, more and more sediment as i get closer to the bottom, last little bit is just muck, but it settles fast, pretty tone and still light looking. the aroma is sharp, like lemon juice from concentrate in the door of the fridge, white vinegar, high order acidity, mouthwatering right away, but its neat with the tannic fruit that teases cranberry and raspberry while still obviously being red wine grape, less vinous, more actual grape fruitiness, nice. maybe light woodiness to it, some wheat malt in place it seems still, and some funk with the acid, its not all pucker there is some wild character too giving it depth, if it was even a little less sour it would be awesome, and thats true with the flavor too where the acid really takes over and hits powerfully, but the palate does get used to it a little bit and as it warms, the grape element comes out more, hints of currant, fruit punch, and even tart apple in the mix, a pop of sulfur from the fruit as well it seems which sets up the wild side of the ferment in the back half of this. so sharp it almost burns. unique stuff, wish i was catching this one fresher, its just too far with the acid, but i love the use of an uncommon wine grape and i think overall there is still a lot to like about this. nothing but love for what atypical does, thankful to have been able to partake in this one, weird as it is...
