Golden Strong Ale was Belgium's answer to beer drinkers' increasing preference for golden lagers in the early 20th century. Lore has it that the brewer deemed his creation a "devil of a beer." We consider it devilish for its combination of easy drinkability yet substantial strength. Gilded Age is beautifully subtle- fruity apple and pear notes from the yeast and just a tad spicy from Saaz hops and a bit of alcohol warmth in the finish.

Poured from the can into a tulip style glass.
Beautiful clear slightly hazed body, with small rising faint touches of fine carbonation. Big gold and orange gleaming appearance, with a faint white two finger touching head. Minimal rocky-ness in the head, some slight retention, but a fairly good sized collar. Quite a real nice looking brew.
Solid aroma. Hints a little ester of faint apricot, some sticky candy like sweetness and a fair hint of boozy alcohol. Some touches of waffery malt white cookie dough. Quite nice even if running a little hot.
Palate does real well. A bit of wet body though sort of watery honey feeling, but manages a solid flavor. Light touching malt and faint hinting fruit ester, with a light touch of yeast and malt density. Hinted heat is much more in control on ther palate here, as the warmth is still there to remind you of it's style. Luckily it's not a boozy mess.
Not a bad sense of style, but lacks some of the classic big estery and depth of flavor for a big Belgian.

Golden color, slightly cloudy. Poured a moderate sized white head with so-so retention.
Slightly clovey nose, a bit of a candy sweetness, a bit of apple cider
Fairly sweet up front, with a subtle Belgian yeast character of clove and pepper and a slight apple fruitiness. These initial flavors gradually fade away in the finish, scrubbed by the copious carbonation and hints of alcohol.
Medium body and highly carbonated, and a bit of alcoholic warming.
The difference between a tripel and a golden strong has always escaped me, but the flavor and mouthfeel seem in the ballpark for what they should be (for either of those styles). Think with some aging time for it to brighten, and a more aggressive pour by me, the appearance might be a little better than I saw here.
