Sampling a cellar temp growler poured into a snifter. I picked up the growler at the brewpub the other day during lunch. The beer pours a clear garnet color with an eggshell white densely packed creamy head of 4 cm even with a gentle pour. The creamy head fades to a sturdy edge layer with some clingy lattice. The aroma is some caramel and toffee with a bit of brown sugar. No real hops which is appropriate for the style. Overall the nose is on the mild side.
The first sip reveals a lighter body than I expected with very fine gentle rolling carbonation. The texture is smooth and makes for an easy drinking beer.
Flavor is as nose advertises with all malt, caramel and brown sugar dominant the tastes on this brew. There is some dark fruit character that I didnt get on the nose and I do get a little big of earthy hops on the finish and maybe just a little warming booze on the swallow.
This is a decent scotch ale, although i wish the body was a little more robust and syrupy to boost the physical experience. Worth it if you like malty brews as a good alternative to all the IIPA out there these days.

On tap at City Steam in downtown Hartford. Pours a dark ruby brown - almost but not quite black - with a tan head. Initial impression is a fairly neutral roasted maltiness with some odd overtones of dark fruit. Medium mouthfeel (too light for a true Stout) and light carbonation (about right for the style). Fruitiness carries through the finish. I love most Scotch Ales, but this is not one I'd revisit.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
