Deep, dark brown body with heavy carbonation visible only with a back-light. Tall, thick, creamy and frothy tan head with excellent retention. Nice stringy lacing as the head does recede.
Roasted aroma. Nutty, smokey, and roasty.
Initially, the taste is roasted malts and smooth. By the middle, the bitterness begins and grows well into the finish and aftertaste, leaving a bitter and roasty flavor. With the second sip, the bitterness is now hitting at the beginning as well. Underneath the bitterness, if I concentrate, I can detect more of the typical brown ale flavors of caramel, with even a bit of sweetness well hidden. The alcohol is not evident at all in aroma, flavor, or in any part of the aftertaste, but it does show up in in the level of buzz.
Overall, this beer starts out with a very nice look, and OK aroma, and decent flavor, however the flavor is overwhelmed by the high level of bitter hops. Personally, I don't think this combination works very well. It's not a bad beer, but it is definitely for fans of bitter malty beer.
The brewers notes (via Untappd) say, "A malty, hoppy, and bitter imperial brown ale. Why not."
A better question might be "Why?"
