Picked this up because there ain’t enough good barleywines. Anywhere. 16 oz. can dated 4/28/21 with red & black art that looks vaguely flame-like. Referencing Pompeii?

The pour is dark red with a healthy dollop of muddy brown mixed in & a nose that’s meeker than expected: tons of dark fruit, toffee.

Pompatus is Sweet. Surpassingly sweet. Shasta cherry cola sweet. Which is precisely the overwhelming taste: flat cherry cola. Gentle toffee background along with a mild alcohol sting, raw sugar, molasses. Where’s the bourbon? MIA. Maple syrup thick. The big can is several ounces too much, but I’m going to power through. No quitters here.

This can is too sweet even for this sugar-guzzler. Drastic Measures has been hit & miss for this alcoholic & this one is just a bit outside. Mediocre in every sense of the word.

16oz can. '4/28/21' canning date on label.
Deep brown colored body. Light tan head, with a brief existence. No lacing.
Aroma of caramel, toffee and dark fruit of prune, date, and raisin.
Taste is flavor rich, with a bit of zip. The sweetness is from the mix of toffee/caramel and dried dark fruit - prune and date.
Thicker than average mouth feel. Some syrup texture. Okay carbonation.
Warming but higher ABV% is well hidden. Truly a sipper. Overall quite a sweet expressing beer.
