Hoping for something better than the current overly starched modern American IPAs, a pint can of this was cracked open. Disappointedly, there was plenty of nearly stark white foam produced by the pour of the entire contents into a clear glass liter mug. Bronze-amber is it's color. Customarily, the foam recedes unevenly, unattractively and in this case, unfortunately very slowly. That's too bad, because the aroma is invitingly earthy and mildly piney with hops. Despite the ugly look, this tastes great. The hops combination works very nicely, giving this a layered hop flavor that builds bitterness as it dries out during the finish. That aspect captures what's expected from a good West Coast IPA. Its body is a little light, surprising, but not unexpected considering all the erratic foam. West Coast IPAs aren't particularly crafted for their body, so no disappointment, nor rating decrease there. Once the foam subsided, this turned out to be a very nice version of a true WCIPA, with a decent hop bite, dry backbone and light body. That's the understood epitome of one in this style.
