So right off the bat, the Black is Beautiful (marketing) I had is 12%, but it was listed as a barrel aged version. Would be odd for the regular and the barrel aged to be the same abv, but hey, I'll let the drones at Next Glass advocate delve into that clarification. I'm writing the first review for this product here at this Next Glass database. You're welcome.
So, black is beautiful pours black. Shock. It is beautiful. Namesake checks out. 1/3" brown head. Aroma has a boozier charred edge to it, hot bourbon, hot grains scorched earth. Styx is kind of like a mashup of Flaming Lips and Queen.
The taste is a significant improvement, no longer does that scorched alcohol heat and grain dominate, it comes together in a more svelte package which is also a nod to the mouth feel. Smoother, not as strong, more enjoyable than the nose. Slight chocolate dark unsweetened feel to it without being chalky or too harsh.
A lot of these brave noise black if beautiful beers tried to coast by on their ideology, but this one was actually enjoyable.
