Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with a quarter finger khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, whiskey, dark dried fruit and mild cinnamon. Flavor is dry caramel malt, whiskey, dates, figs, cinnamon and a touch of coffee. Dried plums and dates with holiday spices in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. The base beer was a solid winter warmer style ale with a German bock style body and appropriate spicing. The barrel aged version is a bigger, more complex ale with clear whiskey barrel character and flavor notched up a bit across the board. The body is also more substantial. Barrel aging a winter warmer is not a common strategy, but these guys ended up with something quite tasty. Well done.
