Velvety and viciously viscous, this stout is well-balanced, pleasantly sweet, with a little lovin' on the side. Its far more similar to a modern pastry stout than a bitter Russian's take on the style, though we trust the name already gave that away.

Deep brown pushing black with 2 fingers of creamy reddish light brown head - slightly viscous appearance.
Smells of dark chocolate malt, vanilla, caramel, cake batter note, and just a touch of a fruity - perhaps cherry aroma.
Tastes of sweet chocolate but with a bit of roasty espresso, vanilla, caramel and again just a touch of fruity floral hop. Certainly evokes flavours of a semisweet chocolate cake.
Creamy smooth medium full mouthfeel - not as thick as pour suggested and also though sweet not cloying and does finish with a bit of dryness. Worthy of the base cake.

An imperial stout with cacao nibs made in collaboration with Duchess Bakeshop in Edmonton inspired by their signature chocolate cake, Duke Cake.

This is the first brew of their Imperial stout series.

Appearance - Pours a dark espresso brown with three fingers of mocha head.

Smell - earthy and leafy hops, roasted malts, coffee bean, cocoa, dark chocolate, hint of vanilla, caramel notes, and earthy yeast.

Taste - earthy and leafy hops upfront then quickly goes into the coffee bean, cocoa, dark chocolate, hint of vanilla, and caramel notes. The earthy yeast rounds out the brew. Not as sweet as the description makes it seem.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes smooth and dry with all elements lingering.

Overall - A bold, roasty, and delicous brew that plays on the Duchess bakeshop's signature cake. A nice first offering as part of the new series from these guys. This one may not be up everyone's alley but for me, this hits the mark on all fronts and the ABV is well hidden. This is a perfect brew on this frigid Cowtown evening.
