This deep amber to red IPA has the aroma of earthy hops, citrus and grass. The roasted malts play well with a bouquet of hops giving it a balanced malt to hop bitterness with a clean finish and some residual hop flavor, almost a bittered berry of sorts. This Northwest style Red IPA may have been the starting point of the IPA craze which quickly switched to a drier, lighter ale. Our take boasts its roasted malts and complex flavors well enough to be placed next to the Iron Throne.

On draught at the brewery. Served in a pint glass. It pours a slightly hazy, ruby-cranberry color with a respectable light khaki cap and thin sheen of long-lasting lacing. Its nose is dank, herbal, and earthy. It's as if a shovel of earth were removed after a rainstorm. There is also the smell of fresh citrus and pine needles. The taste is equal to the aroma: it's malty with notes of tobacco, resinous pine needles, spices and freshly-brewed coffee at the finish. It's quite tasty. The mouth feel is moderately creamy with appropriate carbonation, and it's amazingly complex and flavorful for 5% ABV. Overall, I am quite impressed by this Red IPA. It's modest but very enjoyable. I hope it's available throughout he autumn months and will seek it out again.
