Solitary Confinement

10 oz. pour on draught at the brewery. It's very attractive: ink black with a robust, creamy, medium-khaki-colored cap and thick, swirling lacing. A classic look for the style. The smell is fragrant with rich, dark malt, clean citrus, fresh pine needles, and a whiff of caramel and nuts. The taste opens malty with notes of sourdough but quickly expands to pine sap, tart grapefruit and lemon, and earthy notes. There is little malt sweetness. It's well-balanced and the bitterness is not biting. The mouth feel is full-bodied and creamy with appropriate carbonation and the 8.8% ABV doesn't distract. Overall, Solitary Confinement is a very solid Black IPA. I would seek it out.
