8 ounce pour on draught at the brewery. It pours a rich mahogany with dark ruby hues. The head fizzled away almost immediately. Its smell is red wine-forward with notes of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, and cola. It's also a bit earthy and musty from the wine casks. The taste is very sweet - almost cloying. Unlike in the nose the Barleywine leads with lots of toffee and brown sugar, along with raisin and fig. The red wine emerges as it warms and provides balance but it's still very sweet. That said, it packs a lot of flavor. The one thing lacking is the bitterness I'd expect from an American Barleywine. I would have guessed it to be the English variant and was surprised by the brewer's style designation. It's probably the least bitter American Barleywine I've tasted. The mouth feel is very thick and syrupy with low/moderate carbonation. What's amazing is how well the monstrous 17.5% ABV is hidden. I would never have known. Overall Lethal Injection isn't for the faint hearted in terms of the sweetness and gravity but it's very well made and worth a try (you; not your designated driver!).
