SRM 4-5 with a bright orange glow. Haziness maintains the glow without any murkiness. A big, three inch, creamy white head recedes faster than a speeding glacier. A dense coating of lace forms on a PBGC IIPA glass, while the head holds for the entire session.
The aroma has much more grass and earthiness than expected. Overripe apricot skins are followed by subtle, yet clear, tone of orange in the background. Some faint grains play off the other aromas, leaving a confusing darkness up front, with brightness behind.
The flavor has far less fruit than expected. While bitter and sweetness is somewhat balanced, bitterness and astringency quickly follow roughly within expectation. Apricot is the primary note with orange juice providing a close second. The finish is long, strong, and musky. Bitterness builds with orange pith and astringency. Pineapple becomes apparent with warmth.
Body is medium to full with a coarse wool texture and light scrubbing carbonation. Alcohol is as expected. Slight metallic notes are apparent, due to the astringency which constantly builds throughout.
This beer is enjoyable, and perhaps would score better as a Hazy East Coast IPA. While I am hesitant to recognize it as an NEIPA, it is certainly a stretch to call is a Double. All said, it is enjoyable on its own merits, and went well with a quiet New Year's Day. This beer is definitely worth revisiting when Summer comes around.
