“ Third Barrel is a unique concept, a collaboration brewery between Stone Barrel Brewing and Third Circle Brewing who have combined their experience, resources, love for brewing and absolute passion for beer to create one of Ireland’s most cutting edge breweries.” from the website.
It says “Blended BA Imperial Stout” on the front of the can with some explanation on the back: “A rich, decadent imperial stout aged for 6 months in a blend of Irish Whiskey, Bourbon and Red Wine (Cabernet Sauvignon) barrels.”
Top: forms barely an inch of tan head, quicker than average retention. One slight ring of lacing around the inside of the glass remains.
Colour: jet black, deep ruby on the edges held against a strong light source, seems clear, no haze.
Smell: dominant Cabernet Sauvignon, roasted and sweet malts under its blanket with some noticeable bourbon.
Taste: silky, with a lot of Cab. Sauv., , med- carbonation with tiny microbubbles and a peppery, dry finish. Full body, full strength. Expected more complexity to be honest.
Summary: strong, warming, different. A great company for those winter/Christmas times. I’d prefer a bit less wine intensity and more roasted/chocolate malts, nevertheless, it’s a lovely beer.
