Drank from a 1 pint can purchased at Fort Point Market, Boston, MA
03/17/21
Served in a tulip

The nearly opaque, tangerine colored body was topped by a frothy, finger-tall, off-white crown that had a subtle orange tint to it. Within seconds, the head disappeared entirely and there was no lacing whatsoever. A fine layer of sediment coated the glass from top to bottom.

The aroma was outstanding. Big tropical fruit presence. Passionfruit came through strongest. Mango was also quite apparent. Good dose of tangerine too. Peach and apricot notes were also detectable. As the beer sat, the stone fruits intensified.

The flavor profile was also impressive though somewhat more muddled than the nose. Big tangerine presence up front. Both tangy and sweet. Pineapple appeared next. Good dose of passionfruit as well. Hint of mango. Some lemon notes and wheaty tartness came through on the back end and the finish. More lingering citrus and a touch of rind-like pith after the swallow.

The mouthfeel was solid but somewhat nondescript. Medium bodied for the style. The liquid contained a super fine, moderate effervescence that suited the beer nicely.

Skygazer always impress me with their Watercolor series beers, and this one was definitely another winner. The only ingredients I did not pick up on were the vanilla and the milk sugar, but they were hardly missed.

As the face of Berlinerweiss is changing from the bracingly sour, bone dry sour wheat flavor and into something richer, fruitier, overly complex and creamier. While some will say this is a bastion of a once classic ale, no one can deny that this sour fruit beer is downright delicious.

Pouring with the identical appearance of frothy orange juice, the passionfruit, mango, tangerine, peach, apricot and pineapple replay of the Watercolors Berlinerweiss series is obviously chocked full of fruit and its evident to the eye alone. A richer scent of tropical, citrus, orchard fruit and stone fruit create an extremely juicy scent with a pep of tartness that brings a wine-like character to the nose. Nearly as rich to taste, the first sip and nearly thick with a jammy malt sweetness, cereal and taffy.

Zesty with lime, lemon, cider and gooseberry from the underlying ale, the tangerine flavors couple with mango, apricot and peach for a racy citrus but succulent tropical blend. Early tartness is buffered by a creamy underlay of vanilla and sweetness before eventually allowing the taste to turn to full blown sourness. With a strong acidic twinge to an otherwise fruit punch, bellini, sherbet-like smoothness, the late taste is lightly herbal with verbena, pink lemonade and dry burlap.

Full bodied for sour ale, the fruited sour ale departs from the crisp, dry and refreshing taste of traditional Berlinerweiss and turns it into something all together different- a full flavored fruit beer with a jolt of sourness for a radiant fruit finish and a linger of peppery sourness.
